Cinematical seven: Religious thrillers that rule

One of my favorite scenes in the history of movie horror comes at the end of "Rosemary's baby." Titular baby was delivered and promptly kidnapped. Rosemary, which had begun to suspect that the child be remunerated away next door brandishing a kitchen knife escapes in neighboring apartments. What Polanski brilliant movie has spent two hours suggests and insinuating suddenly explicitly. Rosemary peers in the crib and shrinks away in horror. "He was the father of his eyes," says Roman Castavet. Rosemary does not understand. Then, finally: "Satan was his father, not a man! He came from Hell and married the son of a mortal woman. "say hello to the other in the room," hail Satan! "— continues delivering crazed incantation, which culminates in another hearty call and response:" hail Satan! "

Scene epitomizes and reap the potential danger of religious horror. Rosemary's baby "and its progeny borrow from story that many (if not most) people in the Western world is very serious. Even non-believers know story and come in with their own take on it. A lot can go unsaid as that Satan, begetting a son is really huge, Apocalypse portending a transaction. Done is that baby Rosemary's baby "is certainly, this music can be immensely creepy. But it also can go to the South, very quickly. Hit the wrong tone and you break something cheap and hockey instead of scary. Examples abound. "End of days" anyone? "Legion"?

"The rite," opening tomorrow, is particularly interesting model because it constantly tightrope-Walking the line between the eerie and sirenen. "The Exorcist" was his obvious inspiration and for good reason. Below the fold we offer seven less canonical examples for religious horror that works.

1. "the ninth gate" (Roman Polanski, 1999) – three decades after "Rosemary's baby," Polanski returned to well with this lovely, unbelievably underrated occult horror. Somewhat unclear, incomprehensible, but beautiful and endlessly engrossing film – in lush libraries and mansions and possibly Castle – without klasnata and silly combines. It also includes the classic musical score by the Polish composer Wojciech Kilar.

2. "Stigmata" (Rufus Wainwright, 1999) – this can be mainly for religious mumbo-jumbo junkies, but it is pretty good. Dynamic and stylish, it did work as horror movies, but also ends dotaciata thoughtfully consider the problem of corruption within religious institutions – even as it makes the Catholic Theology minced. Funny things.

3. "Lawyer of the devil (Taylor Hackford, 1997) — Yes, Reeves is a problem and the ending is a lie, but this intense, impressively made movie is too many pleasures to refuse. If nothing else, the Groove of Al Pacino, hamming it as a Scratch, exquisitely written lots of shouting nonsense for God and free will.

4. ' Last Exorcism ' (Daniel Stamm, 2010) – the films on this list, "the last Exorcism" is the closest cousin of the weekend: "Rite", that one of his hobby is trying to find out whether there was in fact something supernatural is happening. Daniel Stamm film is better, largely because it supports longer mystery not tipping his hand until a sharp, slightly disappointing ending.

5. "Constantine" (Francis Lawrence, 2005) – if the first three films on this list were too stupid to you, then don't even bother with this completely ridiculous Phantasmagoria, where it appears that Jesus was killed by a copy of fate, which now is hidden somewhere in Mexico. There is also a Tilda Swinton, winged Archangel Gabriel, which is nothing if not interesting.

6. the ' House of the devil (Ti West, 2009) – albeit very few people saw this, this is one of the best horror movies of the Decade. "House of the devil" is 80 minutes of the extraordinary weather applications 15 minutes incredibly satisfying-exclusion.

7. "Intoxication" (Michael Tolkin, 1991) – it is almost impossible to blurb this deeply and completely only movie – together with "the last temptation of Christ," the most sincere and probing examination of Christianity and cinematic effects, philosophical, mesmerizing thriller form. If you haven't seen it, this is your weekend viewing. Is unforgettable.
